Ships at Bermuda · 1800 – 1950

Letters, covers and cards from the ships that called at Bermuda, each with the story behind it.

◆

Bermuda was the Royal Navy’s base in the western Atlantic for well over a century, and a remarkable amount of mail passed through it: letters written aboard ships lying at Grassy Bay, cards bought ashore and posted weeks later from Halifax or Gibraltar, covers that went home in whichever ship happened to be sailing next.

Each page here takes one ship, or one item, and follows the evidence: the covers themselves, the Royal Gazette, the Navy Lists and whatever else I can find. Where something is still uncertain, I say so.
